Frequently Asked Questions
Therapy can be a scary idea for a lot of people. You might have had a difficult experience in the past or you don’t know what to expect. Here are some commonly asked questions that may help relieve that anxiety.
How does online therapy work?
I use a HIPAA-compliant platform called Simple Practice which allows you to do therapy from your phone or computer as long as you have a good internet connection. You can be located anywhere in the state of Utah. I am proud to offer therapy services in this flexible manner because it allows me to serve a greater population. I recommend that you have a private and comfortable space for our sessions. For more information about how to be prepared for an online therapy session, check out this blog post!
How long does treatment last?
The answer to this question is, it depends. I have found that when clients commit to 12-15 sessions, they make significant improvement in that timeframe. In the first two sessions, we will establish your goals for treatment and be able to discuss a realistic timeframe for you. I encourage an open format where we can discuss how your needs are being met in therapy and where you want your focus to be. With that said, some of my clients find that therapy is a maintenance activity and will maintain appointments to continue to manage stressors.
How long is a session and how often do we meet?
Each session is 50 minutes long and weekly sessions are recommended when you get started. The first two sessions are assessments where I will take time to get to know you and your history. We will identify areas that we need to focus on as well as goals for your treatment. From there, weekly sessions will allow you to see progress on your goals in an efficient manner. As you feel better, we will start reducing your sessions to every other week and then to monthly until you feel ready to successfully discharge. This is a collaborative decision that we will make together.
What are your session fees?
The first session is $200 and every session after that is $180 each. I accept all major credit cards, Health Savings Accounts, and Flex Savings Accounts. See below for information regarding insurance. I am unable to a accept Care Credit Cards. If therapy doesn’t feel accessible due to lack of insurance or fees, please check out my online course here.
Do you accept insurance?
I am in-network with the following insurance companies: SelectHealth, PeHP, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Optum, and EMI Health.
Do you charge any fees?
There are fees associated with no-shows and late cancellations. I wait 10 minutes in a session and if I don’t see you or hear from you in that time frame, I will end the session and label it a no-show. To cancel or reschedule a session, please allow at least 24-hour notice. Unfortunately, I am unable to bill insurance companies for a session that did not occur, therefore, the full cost of the session gets passed to you. More information about why I charge fees can be found in this blog post.
What is a Good Faith Estimate and the No Surprise Act?
If you choose to pay the cash rate or do not have insurance and will be paying the cash rate, you will be provided with a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your mental health care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. The estimate is for the total expected cost of any non-emergency services. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Please make sure to save a copy of your Good Faith Estimate. You will be emailed a copy of your Good Faith Estimate prior to our first session or at the point you advise me that you will be paying with cash. I ask that it is signed before we start our session. All estimates are provided to project 15 sessions, however, a new one will be provided if we agree that additional sessions are needed.
